Wanda Sue (Weatherford) Word

Sue Word passed away at Baylor Scott & White hospital in Waco, Texas at 11:26 P.M. on February 23, 2022. She was 84 years, 9 months, and 24 days of age.

Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M., Monday, February 28, 2022 at the First Baptist Church in Iredell, Texas. Rev. Dr. Neil Wade will officiate. Visitation will be held at Lawson Funeral Home in Meridian from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M., Sunday, February 27, 2022. Pallbearers will be Nathan Word, Ricky Lewis, Nic Word, Zach Word, Ashton Proffitt, and Landry Proffitt.

Born Wanda Sue Weatherford on April 30, 1937 in Rule, Texas to Grady and Helen Weatherford. She was born and spent her early years in west Texas. Early in her life she moved to the Iredell area and attended Iredell Schools where she met and married JB Word on September 5, 1953. At this time, she dropped out of school to start her family but always thought of going back and completing school to get her diploma. She did go back and in 1969 completed high school and graduated with her baby brother Jim Weatherford. She first became a grandma at the age of 40 and then was well on her way to becoming the lady everyone came to know as Mama Sue. In later years because of her love for kids she taught the 4&5 year old Sunday School class, worked and substituted at the Iredell school and baby sit numerous Iredell children. The name Mama Sue grew and carried on for many children that came through the Iredell School System.

She was preceded in death by her husband, JB Word in June of 2013; father, Grady Weatherford; mother, Helen Weatherford; and sister, Lorene Weatherford Wright.

She leaves behind her children, Steve Word and wife, Tracey, of Tolar, Jeff Word and wife, Teresa, of Iredell, Sherri Word Proffitt and husband, Patrick, of Iredell; 7 grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; sister, Linda Weatherford Hanshew; brother, Jim Weatherford; numerous other nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.
