Veleta Phillips

Veleta M. Phillips, age 93, of Iredell, passed away Sunday morning, November 23, 2014, at her residence.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, December 6, 2014, in the Lawson Funeral Home Chapel with David Ramsey officiating. Interment in Mitchell Cemetery in Iredell.

Veleta was born June 22, 1921, in Iredell, Texas, where she was raised and educated. She had lived within an 8 mile radius of Iredell all of her life. On June 26, 1938, she was married to Clarence Weldon "Peck" Phillips in Meridian.

Veleta had three great passions in life: her home, flowers and cooking. She kept a very clean house and was very proud of having the prettiest yard in town. She loved flowers of all kinds. Veleta loved to cook for her family and friends. She became famous for her pies. She always knew everyone's favorite. She worked for the Iredell I.S.D. as a teachers aide for 13 years and retired from there in 1990. Veleta loved spending time with all the children in school. She was a member of the Iredell First United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her children, Loretta Owens and her husband, Don, of Clifton and Reba Storey and her husband, Jim, of Iredell; three grandchildren, Rene Seay of Granbury, Shelly Owens of Arlington and Janet Martin of Kentucky; five great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren; brothers, Robert Earl Dennis and wife, June, of Iredell and Jackie Dennis of Salinas, CA.; numerous nieces, nephews and a host of wonderful friends, especially the Robert and Diane Scott family of Waco; a special thanks to Johnny Jones for all he did for her and to Marlene and Julio Perez who helped with things when she could no longer do them for herself.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert A. and Nellie Lee Blue Dennis; husband, Clarence W. "Peck" Phillips; daughter, Becky Carter and a grandson, Steve Owens.
