Janis Lynn Proffitt

January 6, 1944 — February 13, 2025

Iredell, Texas

Janis Lynn Gustafson Proffitt, age 81, was born on January 6, 1944 to James “Jimmy” Monroe and Argroula “Argie” Caras Gustafson in Fort Worth, Texas and passed away in Hico, Texas on February 13, 2025 to be with her Lord Jesus.

Janis was a nurturing loving mother and “Granny” to her children and cherished grand and great- grandchildren as well as a devoted wife of 57 years to her beloved husband Denny Proffitt until his death in 2019.

In 1969, Denny and Janis moved their family to Iredell from Hurst Texas. Soon after settling down in Iredell, the couple purchased, owned and operated Proffitt Feed Mill. In the late ‘70’s Janis hired on as an accountant for the Norton Company in Stephenville, Texas (now Saint-Gobain Abrasives). During her employment with the Norton Company, Janis developed a desire to become a teacher. She enrolled in the TMATE teacher certification program at Tarleton State University through which she received her bachelor’s degree and teaching certificate. She began her teaching career with the Iredell ISD in 1988 teaching Business and Computer Literacy where she later retired.

Janis was a member of the Eastern Star and the Iredell First United Methodist Church where she participated in and sometimes lead the choir. She loved hymns and loved singing them with her beautiful voice. She enjoyed playing cards and 42 and cherished her time playing and fellowshipping with her friends and neighbors at the Masonic Lodge.

She was known and will always be remembered for her sweet and kindred spirit to all she came in contact. Her beautiful smile would light up every room she entered. As a mother, regardless of the situation, she always had the natural ability to make chicken soup out of chicken feathers. She was loved by all and will be deeply missed.

Janis was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years Denny H. Proffitt, parents Jimmy and Argie Gustafson and is survived by her brother Jay Monroe Gustafson and wife Vicki of Mansfield, Texas, children Rod Proffitt and wife April of Stephenville, Doug Proffitt and wife Jill of Belton, Cole Proffitt and wife Rita of Iredell, Sandy Proffitt Pyburn and husband Jerry of Iredell and Denise Glab and husband Wally of Lubbock, 14 grandchildren; Summer Langford of Stephenville, Angela Conatser of Odessa, Rebekah Proffitt of Princeton, Misti Thompson of Graham, Stacey McVicar of Belleville, Justin Proffitt of Burleson, Jacob Fletcher of Waco, Garett Fletcher of Ohio, Brayden Fletcher of Cresson, Wendy Oldham of Belton, Ember Ristau of Austin, Nick Heutzenroeder of Iredell, Melisa Penwell of Iredell, Elizabeth Villarreal of Troy; 27 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.
