Jan Smith Powell

October 9, 1942 — October 21, 2024

Clifton

Jan Lucille Powell, of Clifton, Texas peacefully joined our Lord in heaven on Monday, October 21st, 2024 in Waco, Texas at the graceful age of 82. She was born in Lubbock on October 9th, 1942 as Bennie Geneva Hickman to parents Arthur Benton and Ozia Neva Hickman. Bennie was adopted November 27, 1951. She was raised in Brady and Pilot Point with her father Ben D. Smith and mother Juanita Smith who gave her the name Jan Lucille Smith. Jan was the apple of her parents eyes. They adored and loved her as she did them until their passing. Jan is also preceded in death by her siblings: Charles Billy Sliger, Alta Vivian Sliger, Virginia Doris Sliger, Juanita Griffin, Cleo Harrison, and Neal Hickman.

In the summer of 1984, on a chance encounter with a gentleman playing pool where her friend worked at, Jan met John Irwin Powell. They talked, laughed and played pool till closing time then went out for breakfast at Ihop. The rest was history in the making. They were married on November 27, 1984. John may survive her in life but her love for John was undeniable as is her commitment to her family and the Lord she served. Jan and John lived four decades, caring for loved ones, raising children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Being adopted, knowing who Bennie came from, and where Jan came from was just as important as the legacy she created with her own descendants.

Jan is survived by her husband, John; daughters, Tesha Smith (husband Glenn), Sabra Betser (husband Tracy) and Stephanie Brown (husband Richard); grandchildren, Randiessa Isenhower (husband Brendon), Bryan Buccini (Maira Salazar), Cody Betser (Courtney Word), Ashlyn Jarvis, Shawna Brown (Reggie Wallace Jr.) and Danielle Smith; she also leaves behind her great-grandchildren, Nicholas Anaya, Ricky Buccini, Emily Isenhower, Melanie Isenhower, Devin Milton, Aliyah Okere, Alyvia, and Remi Wallace; and foster-sister, Dr. Ai Lan Doan Kobayashi.

"His Love is strong and his grace is free. He can do for you what he's done for me. Let me tell you about my Jesus and let my Jesus change your life.'' -Anne Wilson
