Gloria Louise (Martin) Hewlett

Dr. Gloria Martin Hewlett Ed. D. of Dallas, Texas passed away on Friday, February 22, 2019 at the age of 88. She was a native of Bosque County, the only daughter of Dock and Leona Martin of Meridian. Born in 1930 in Clifton, Texas, she and her parents moved to Meridian where she grew up. She graduated from Meridian High School in 1948 and entered John Tarleton Agricultural College (JTAC) that fall. Tarleton is a tradition in her family as an aunt graduated in 1927, cosuins, a daughter-in-law, her husband and currently a grandson have attended. Her education includes the Associate Degree from JTAC in 1950, the B.S. Degree from the University of Corpus Christi (Currently Texas A&M at Corpus Christi) in 1962, the M.Ed at Northwestern State University, Natchitoches, Louisiana in 1974 and the Ed. D. from East Texas State University (currently Texas A&M Commerce) in 1988.

As a public school teacher in Louisiana and Texas Gloria Hewlett had the opportunity to present workshops, teach the deaf and to work with student teachers. She retired from the Mesquite Independent School District, Mesquite, Texas in 1991 after teaching approximately 27 years.

Active in the Dallas Retired Teachers Association (DRTA) she has served as President, and as Vice-President of District 10 of Texas Retired Teachers Association. The DRTA actively supported the January 19, 2002 Bond Election for the Dallas Public School. She has been active on the Community Relations Committee and Partners in Education in the Dallas Public School System.

After retiring she embarked on a career as a civic volunteer. She served as President of the Dallas Branch of the American Association of University Women, (AAUW) the first organization in Dallas to offer college scholarships to female high school graduates. As president she initiated the Expanding Your Horizons Conference for 7th and 8th grade girls, where the girls were introduced to non-traditional careers for women in the Science and Math fields. She was featured in an article in the AAUW magazine THE OUTLOOK and served as an officer on the state level. She has been honored twice by the Dallas Branch with a named gift to the Educational Foundation (1996-1997 & 1991-1993.)

President of Eta Zeta Chapter of the Delta Kappa Society International, she worked for the professional interest and position of women in education, endorsed desirable legislation in the interests of women educators and contributed to scholarships to aid outstanding women educators.

Gloria Hewlett was appointed to the Senior Affairs Committee for the City of Dallas by City Council Woman Donna Halstead. There she participated in issues of importance to Senior Affairs such as a Job Fair for Senior Citizens, Rides for the Handicapped, Health Services available to Senior Citizens and support for the Silver Haired Legislature.

Gloria Hewlett is active as a Circle Leader in the Women of the Church, at Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church in Dallas, Texas, a member of Preservation Dallas a charter member of the Women's Museum, a member of the Dallas County Historical Society, Historian for the Women's Council of Dallas, Texas, Inc., a Patron Member of the Bosque County Memorial Museum, and a member of the Bosque County Collection.

She was compiling stories of World War II veterans and persons working in the Defense Industry of Bosque County. A number of these narratives have been published in Bosque County newspapers. As a result of her work 100 men and women will have been interviewed and photographs collected that eventually will be published in a book.

Adept at working with an array of people she has left each organization with a high level of interest in the membership, initiated successful projects and has exceeded goals and expectations of the group.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Robert E. Hewlett II. She is survived by her sons, Robert E. Hewlett III (Bobby) and his wife, Tracy, and Jeffrey Martin Hewlett and his wife, Grace, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 P.M. until 8 P.M., Monday, March 4, 2019 at Lawson Funeral Home in Meridian. Graveside funeral services will be 10 A.M., Tuesday, March 5, 2019 at the Clifton Cemetery on SH# 6. Rev.
