George Claiborne Phillips, age 84, of Meridian, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, March 19, 2014.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, March 22, 2014, in the Meridian Church of Christ with Michael Phillips, Gary Phillips, and Aaron Woods officiating. Burial was in the Mitchell Cemetery in Iredell. Pallbearers were Reuben Phillips, Caleb Phillips, Josh Phillips, Daniel Phillips, Jed Phillips, Luke Phillips, and Hayden Woods.
A visitation was held from 6 to 8 P.M., Friday, at the Lawson Funeral Home in Meridian.
Mr. Phillips was born March 5, 1930 in Iredell, Texas to George R. Phillips and Zelma Irene Stephens Phillips. He was raised and educated in and around Iredell. He married Rozena Elizabeth Flatt on October 10, 1951 in Meridian and shortly after their wedding, Mr. Phillips, who was proudly serving in the U. S. Army, was sent to Korea and became a veteran of the Korean conflict. After his service to his country ended, Claiborne became an administrator in Civil Service, from which he retired. He was an avid hunter in his younger years, but as time went by, he became more interested in just observing the wildlife and the beauty of Bosque County. Claiborne was always helpful to others and could often be found helping someone in the upkeep of their yards and homes. He also enjoyed gardening and sharing the produce of his garden with neighbors, family, and friends. Mr. Phillips was a very active member of the Meridian Church of Christ, and a past member of the Meridian Economic Development Committee, as well as various other organizations.
Mr. Phillips was preceded in death by his parents, George and Zelma Phillips; his wife, Beth Phillips; his sister, Marie Ammonds; and his brother, Clarence Phillips.
He is survived by his children, Michael Phillips and his wife, Kris, of Glen Rose, Gary Phillips and wife, Barbara, of Walnut Springs, Jerald Phillips and wife, Diana, of Grand Prairie and Linda Woods and husband, Aaron, of Tomball; 13 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; beloved friend, Dorothy Crockett, of Meridian, and a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
