Edith Lou (Piner) Davis

Edith Lou Piner Davis of Bosque County was born on September 19, 1930, at Scott & White Hospital in Temple, Texas, to Ray and Olene Piner. She died on January 18, 2020, at 89 years of age at the Lutheran Sunset Home in Clifton, Texas.

Memorial services will be held at 1 P.M., Saturday, January 25, 2020 at the First United Methodist Church in Meridian. Rev. Daniel Hawkins and Rev. Paul Whiteley will officiate.

After her birth, Edith lived with her parents at their home in Crockett County near Ozona, Texas.  She attended school in Ozona and was a part of the school band. After graduation, she went to North Texas State University in Denton, Texas, where she earned a bachelor’s degree and her teaching credentials. There she also met the love of her life, Jim Davis, and after they both graduated, they married on June 14, 1952, in Ozona.

Jim and Edith lived near Snyder, Texas until 1962, where their family grew with the birth of three boys. Then they moved to Richardson, Texas, where their fourth child, a daughter, was born. Edith was a supportive mother, serving as a room mother for elementary school classes, a den mother in her boys’ Cub Scout Troop, and a Sunday school teacher at Spring Valley Methodist Church. She also returned to the classroom where she was a special-education teacher.

In 1979, Jim & Edith moved to Bosque County, where her maternal grandparents had settled in the 1800’s. Edith’s mother and father provided them a place to stay until the Davises found their own place, and they helped care for her mother and father in their final years. She and Jim settled a place about halfway between Meridian and Clifton where they raised cows, goats, sheep, chickens, bees, vegetables, and flowers. They welcomed hummingbirds, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, family and friends.

While in Bosque County, Edith was a good and faithful servant, working as an early childhood teacher for the Bosque County Educational Cooperative, where she taught for several years. She has served God and others through the First United Methodist Church of Meridian in numerous ways, including baking bread for all occasions from the Lord’s Harvest mission fundraisers to bread for communion elements. She showed love to so many through her gift of crocheting. She also was a leading force in the church’s prayer chain.

Edith was preceded in death by her father, Ray Piner, Sr.; her mother, Olene Carlson Piner; and her brother, Ray Piner, Jr. and his wife Fayrene; and her brother Tom Piner. She is survived by her husband, Jim Davis; her sister-in-law, Betty Piner; her son, Chris Davis and his wife, Jeanne; her son, Larry Davis and his wife, Sheri; her son Scott and his partner, Charlie Creasey; her daughter, Debbie Ticer and her husband, Ronnie; grandchildren, Danny and Cortney Davis, Dee and Collin Myers, Amber Davis, Chase and Caroline Davis, Sadie Davis, Kim and Robert Butcher, Michael and Michelle Ticer, Jessica and Jake Bolin, Christina and Dillon Baker; 13 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Edith’s life will be held at 1:00 PM at the First United Methodist Church in Meridian on Saturday, January 25. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be given to either the First United Methodist Church of Meridian (fumcmeridiantx.org), the Rock Church in Cranfills Gap (rockchurch-gap.com), Shriners Hospital (www.shrinershospitalforchildren.org), or St. Jude’s Hospital (www.stjude.org).
