Adam Charles Sowder, Sr., age 93 of Whitney, passed away early Monday morning, March 26, 2018 at a Clifton nursing facility.
Graveside services will be 2:00 P.M., Saturday, March 31, 2018 at the Mitchell Cemetery in Iredell, Texas. Charlie Jones will officiate. Pallbearers will be Charlie Bandy, Adam Sowder, III, Michael Sowder, Jimmy Middlebrook, Keegan Sowder, and Chase McCoy. Honorary Pallbearer is Gage Bandy.
Adam Charles Sowder, Sr., was born on December 20, 1924 in Iredell, Texas to James Ray and Myrtle Lee Hodge Sowder. He served in the U.S. Navy from January 9, 1942 until he was honorably discharged on January 10, 1946. Adam was a retired machinist from Bell Helicopter after 20 years. He had a late in life career in law enforcement in the early 1980's starting out in Johnson County. He served as Chief of Police at Rio Vista for a few years before moving on to Hill County where he retired after 20 years in law enforcement. He married the love of his life, Bettye Jane Carlton on April 29, 1944 in Fort Worth, Texas. The couple had 4 children and a lifetime of precious memories. He enjoyed spending time with all of his family. Adam enjoyed traveling, playing poker and rooting on his Texas Rangers.
Adam is survived by his beloved wife of 73 years, Betty Carlton Sowder; 3 daughters, Judy Bandy and husband, Don, Cindy Conolly and husband, Chris, Rebecca Yandell and husband, Patrick; son, Adam C. Sowder, Jr. and wife, Ramona; 8 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great-grandchildren;
